It is interesting to me that whatever psychological factors have driven the boom in true crime entertainment production (podcasts, blogs, youtube) has not had a simultaneous drive of a true boom in fictional crime entertainment (films, tvs, novels). The true crime move came as the old detective/Crime shows faded in production (Law & Order, CSI, Leverage, White Collar). There are a few here and there but by and large the police procedurals and detective-emphasis crime shows are a thing of the past. Plus, there aren't many youtubers / bloggers / podcasts covering fictional stories the way they do true crime.
